A sake bar that says it is the first of its kind in Boston was named one of America's best bars by a new list from Esquire, released on Thursday, June 1.
Koji Club, located in the Charles River Speedway in Brighton, is on a mission to reframe Japanese sake as an approachable, everyday beverage choice. Esquire lauded the spot's efforts, adding Koji Club to its list of best in America.
The bar, which operates on only 250 square feet (plus a patio with disco ball), offers regular sake tastings and serves glasses of Japanese rice wine to customers on a walk-in or reservation basis.
Types of sake abound at the small Koji Club, including "rosé" sake, flower yeast sake, namazake, fuku, and more.
"Koji Club is everything and more that we wanted," said one Google reviewer. "Absolutely love that you can taste before getting a bottle and that everything is also served by the glass."
"I wanted to experience something different—I’ve never been to a sake bar before, and I didn’t know much about this particular type of alcohol," said another reviewer. "I learned so much about sake, including how well it pairs with cheese! I will definitely be visiting again and highly recommend this bar!"
